Printing Instructions

Printing Your Heart Identity Downloads

Every Heart Identity digital product is delivered as a PDF or image file that you print yourself, either at home or at a print shop. The steps below are written for each type of download, with the exact paper size and print settings that file was made for. Choose the type of download you are printing.

Doodle Draws

Doodle Draws PDF Books

Your Doodle Draws are digital PDF books that you can print at home or take to a local print shop. Follow these simple steps to create your own workbook.

Printing at home

  1. Download and open your PDF.
    • Save the file to your computer first, then open it in a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or your computer's built-in viewer.
    • Opening it in a browser tab works too, but a PDF reader gives you the full print settings.
  2. Print the front and back covers.
    • The first page and the last page of the PDF are your covers. Print both in color.
    • Use cardstock for the covers so the finished book feels sturdy.
    • Print each cover on its own sheet, single-sided, so the inside of each cover stays blank.
  3. Print the inside pages.
    • Use regular white printer paper.
    • Choose black and white or grayscale — the drawing pages are meant to be colored in.
    • Set your printer to double-sided printing, flipping on the long edge.
    • Keep the blank pages. If your printer has a “skip blank pages” option, turn it off.
  4. Put the pages in order.
    • Print one page per side, in the order the PDF supplies them.
    • Choose “Fit to printable area” so nothing is cut off.
    • Do not choose booklet printing — the pages are already arranged for a spiral-bound book.
  5. Assemble your book.
    • Put the front cover first, then the inside pages, then the back cover last, with both cover designs facing outward.
    • A binder, a few staples, or spiral binding all work. Spiral binding along the left edge makes the book lie flat while you draw.

“Flip on long edge” means the pages turn sideways, like a normal book, instead of flipping up like a calendar. Every Doodle Draws page is portrait US Letter with no rotation, so long-edge is the right choice for all nine books.

Why some pages are blank

Each book has blank pages on purpose. They sit on the back of a drawing page so pencil, crayon and marker do not show through onto the next exercise. Because they are part of the layout, printing them keeps your book lined up correctly.

Worksheets are printed sideways

Many of the drawing exercises are laid out sideways on the page. That is intentional — turn your book to use them. Please print them in the orientation they arrive in and do not rotate the pages.

For a print shop

You can show this note to the print shop along with your file:

Covers: Print the first and last PDF pages in color on cardstock, single-sided, leaving the inside of each cover blank.

Interior: Print all pages between the covers in black and white on regular white paper, double-sided, flipping on the long edge. Keep every blank page — they are placed behind the worksheets on purpose.

Layout: Print one PDF page per side in the supplied order, at US Letter 8.5″ × 11″, fit to the printable area without clipping text or drawings. Keep the sideways worksheets in the orientation they are supplied in.

Assembly: Front cover first, back cover last, both designs facing out. Spiral-bind along the left edge with the portrait front cover upright. Please check that the punch holes clear the worksheet grids and text, and leave enough room for the book to lie flat.

With a print shop, the shop handles the cardstock, double-sided printing and binding for you, so you only need to hand over the PDF and this note.

Digital Artwork

Digital Artwork & Paintings

Artwork downloads are high-resolution image files. You can print them at home or take the file to a professional print shop.

Printing at home

  1. Download the artwork file to your computer.
    • Open it in your normal image viewer to check the painting before printing.
  2. Print at the size you purchased.
    • Our artwork is offered in 5×7, 8×10 and 11×14. The size shown when you bought the piece is the size your file was prepared for.
    • Print at 100% or Actual Size, and do not choose Fit to Page or Stretch to Fit — those change the proportions of the painting.
    • Check that the image is not cropped and that the edges are not cut off. If your printer cannot print all the way to the edge of the paper, the painting will show a small white border; that is normal.
  3. Choose your paper.
    • Quality photo paper, matte or glossy, gives the best result.
    • For a framed print, matte photo paper usually shows the colors most gently.
  4. Print a test copy first.
    • Print one copy on plain paper to check the size and placement before you use photo paper.
  5. Frame it or put it in a mat.
    • Once printed, the artwork is ready for a standard frame or mat in the size you chose.

Cropping
Do not crop — the whole painting should print

For a print shop

You can show this note to the print shop along with your file:

File: Hand over the artwork file exactly as downloaded, without resizing or cropping it.

Size: Print at the size you purchased, at 100% / Actual Size, keeping the painting in its original orientation.

Paper: Quality photo paper, matte or glossy, in the matching print size.

Color: Ask them to proof the colors before the final print. Screen colors and print colors are made differently, so a printed piece can look slightly warmer or cooler than the painting on your screen.

Life Story Booklet

Creating Your Life Story

Creating Your Life Story is an 18-page PDF guide for keeping personal and family records. It is a flat PDF, not a folded booklet, so you print the pages and then put them where you want them.

Printing at home

  1. Download and open the PDF.
    • Save it to your computer and open it in a PDF reader so you can see all the print settings.
  2. Print all 18 pages in order.
    • Use US Letter paper, 8.5″ × 11″.
    • Print single-sided. The booklet has no blank filler pages, so single-sided keeps every page readable on its own.
    • Print one page per side, in the order the PDF supplies them.
    • Choose “Fit to printable area” so nothing is cut off.
  3. Choose color or black and white.
    • The front and back covers are in color, and the photographs inside look best in color.
    • Black and white is fine for the writing pages if you would rather save on ink.
  4. Put it together.
    • The first page is the front cover and the last page is the back cover.
    • Put the printed pages in a folder, a binder, or have them stapled or bound at a print shop.

Please do not choose booklet printing for this guide. Booklet printing rearranges and shrinks the pages, and this file is laid out as normal page-by-page PDF.

For a print shop

You can show this note to the print shop along with your file:

File: Print all 18 pages of the PDF in the order supplied, at US Letter 8.5″ × 11″, fit to the printable area.

Printing: Single-sided, one page per side. No booklet imposition, no page reordering.

Color: Color for the covers and the photographs; the writing pages may be printed in black and white.

Finishing: Collate and staple, or bind as the customer prefers. The first page is the front cover and the last page is the back cover.
