The Neuroscience of Why They Work

Doodle Draws are more than just fun—they give your brain a full workout! When you look at a line drawing and try to copy it, several parts of your brain work together. Your eyes see the shapes (visual cortex), your hands move to make the lines (motor cortex), and your brain plans and pays attention to each step (prefrontal cortex). This combination strengthens the brain pathways that help with hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and visual memory—skills useful in art, reading, writing, and even math.

Drawing also trains the small muscles in your hands and fingers. Repeating controlled movements builds dexterity, precision, and endurance—helpful for handwriting, typing, and daily tasks. Copying line by line also improves your sense of where your body is in space, which is especially useful for anyone with motor or coordination challenges. Over time, practicing this way builds confidence, control, and smoothness in how you move.

On top of the physical benefits, Doodle Draws help calm the mind. Focusing on a drawing gives your brain a quiet, structured task, which can reduce stress, improve attention, and help regulate emotions. This is particularly helpful for kids and adults with ADHD, autism, or anxiety, as it provides a predictable, rewarding activity. Simply put, drawing is a low-pressure, screen-free way to strengthen both brain and body.

How Drawing Helps Your Brain

Boosts visual-spatial skills - Drawing helps your brain see patterns, shapes, and relationships—skills often linked to creativity and big-picture thinking.

Improves focus and attention - Drawing requires concentration, planning, and patience—training your attention muscles in a way screens rarely do.

Encourages creativity and imagination - When you draw, you invent visuals, explore stories, or create new ideas, stretching the parts of your brain that handle creativity.

Supports fine motor skills and memory - Holding a pencil or brush and translating ideas onto paper strengthens hand coordination and helps connect visual thinking with memory and movement.

Reduces stress and resets the brain - Drawing is calming and gives your brain a break from constant digital stimulation, making it easier to think clearly and focus.

Bottom line: Drawing is one of the best ways to strengthen creativity, attention, and visual thinking—helping counteract many of the effects of too much screen time.

Every line you draw trains your brain to see, plan, and create.

Tell Me More about Doodle Draws

As mentioned before, Doodle Draws are more than drawing exercises—they are powerful tools for developing perception, memory, and creative thinking. These practices train students to observe carefully, recall visual details, and adapt what they’ve seen into something new. This kind of cognitive flexibility is essential not only in art but also in daily life. Whether problem-solving, expressing ideas, or simply paying closer attention to the world, students build confidence and clarity through this process.

These skills—visual memory, fine motor control, observation, and creative adaptation—are foundational for both artistic growth and real-world success. Students who regularly engage in these exercises become more attuned to their surroundings, more patient in their approach, and more capable of solving problems through creative thinking. It’s a deeply engaging and calming process that strengthens both brain and body while encouraging self-expression.

Our full art curriculum is built on this progression: Transfer (copying what is seen), Retrieval (drawing from memory), and Creation (designing original work). Art teachers — you will want to see this! This philosophy is at the heart of our full art curriculum, which follows these three phases—Transfer, Retrieval, and Creation—in a thoughtfully sequenced, developmentally sound progression.

  • Transfer – Observing and replicating what is seen
  • Retrieval – Drawing from memory to strengthen mental imagery
  • Creation – Using imagination and learned skills to create original artwork and problem solving.

This structured pathway takes students through eight different artistic mediums and has helped many develop professional-quality portfolios—some even earning full-ride scholarships. For art teachers, parents, and therapists, this curriculum provides a clear, powerful way to nurture artistic skill and cognitive development at every level.

The Doodle Draws are the Transfer and Retrieval portion of the art curriculum.

A Tool for Every Environment

Whether you’re in a classroom, homeschool, therapy office, or senior center, Doodle Draws is a powerful tool. It’s more than just a booklet—it’s part of a proven program that builds the brain while filling time with purpose. It helps learners slow down, focus, observe, and express. It boosts confidence and guides them from basic skills to creative growth. Whether you’re teaching many students or helping one child, this resource meets each learner where they are and helps them grow—artistically, mentally, and personally.Doodle Draws offer a calming, purposeful, and highly effective tools for developing focus, patience, and artistic skill. They help individuals of all ages slow down, observe, and connect mind to

Testimonials of Doodle Draws

Dominic I. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do not underestimate the doodle draws! They may seem repetitive and worthless at first but these are the small and simple riddles that will make your drawing skills great. They say that practice makes perfect; Drawing upon the fundamental principle of learning how to see, intentional work and practice with the doodle draws will help to increase your transfer and creative skills. I have seen exactly this in my years of experience drawing the doodle draws.

Milan H. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Doing the transfers and retrievals in art has honestly helped me improve a lot. Transfers has made me way better at looking closely at what I’m drawing and understanding perspective, which is something I used to struggle with. The retrievals have helped me notice small details, basic shapes, and the texture of everyday items. These have trained my brain to remember what I see. Both of these exercises have made drawing feel easier and more natural, and I think they’ve really strengthened my overall art skills.

Mark B. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I had three strokes and then I started taking art from Camille, and she had me do Doodle Draws, Transfers and Retrievals that helped strengthen my brain -- new [neural] pathways. The doctor told me to keep practicing and see what would happen. Now I can do so much better. I couldn't even draw a loop [when I started taking art from her] and now I can copy what I see in Doodle Draws and even draw pictures.
